Conquest of the Useless

Friday, June 26, 2009

Filmmaker Werner Herzog shares the diaries he compiled during the production of his 1982 film "Fitzcarraldo." His book, Conquest of the Useless, vividly recounts the emotional, physical and psychological toll exacted by moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill in the Peruvian jungle without the use of any special effects.

jason robards played fitzcarraldo first. mick jagger played a companion. they shot many scenes until the production trembled (robards got seriously sick). cast and script was changed, eventually kinski played fitzcarraldo. as far as i know, jagger's role was cut out.

you can see some footage with jagger and robards in herzog's "my best fiend".

a) wasn't mick jagger or david bowie supposed to play the role eventually given to klaus?
b) i absolutely loved "White Diamond" as does everyone I play it for.
