Iran: Superpower?

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

What to do about Iran has been a hot topic in American foreign policy debate for a long time. Former CIA operative Robert Baer says that Iran is already well on its way to becoming a superpower. His new book is The Devil We Know.

The question is can Iranians forgive US for its support of Saddam and for its support of MKO and Jundallah?

One of the best interviews I've heard you do. An intelligent, thoughful, knowledgeable guest, and you asked all the right questions to flesh out his interpretation of this important issue.

Yesterday, British gay activist Peter Tatchell of Outrage! wrote up an article about death squads who hunt down gay Iraqis and execute them, before releasing the following terribly sad statement:

"This morning, I received news from Iraq that the coordinator of Iraqi LGBT in Baghdad, Bashar, aged 27, a university student, has been assassinated in a barber shop. Militias burst in and sprayed his body with bullets at point blank range. He was the organiser of the safe houses for gays and lesbians in Baghdad. His efforts saved the lives of dozens of people. Bashar was a kind, generous and extremely brave young man – a true hero who put his life on the line to save the lives of others. My thoughts go out to his loved ones and to the other members of Iraqi LGBT. Their courage is an inspiration to all people everywhere fighting against injustice."

SO glad to hear Bob Baer back on your show. It's just incredibly important for Americans to understand the complexities of Iranian society, and Baer is the best conveyor of this message that I've ever heard.

thanks leonard for finally having someone talk sense about iran, and someone who knows there is more behind the scene politics as well as the history (mossadegh, anti-colonization, anglo iranian, etc) that influences iranian actions.

the only way we can decide what to do w/ iran, is if we start having realistic and accurate conversations like this one.

many thank.
