Wilfrid Sheed

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

The British-born American novelist and essayist Wilfrid Sheed was a writer of gentle wit - who was busy writing for a half-century, though he told Publishers Weekly, "I guess I sort of backed into writing."  A devoted baseball lover, his own dreams of glory on the field were destroyed when he developed polio at the age of 14.  He died recently at the age of 80.  You can hear his last interview with Leonard from June of 1993 when he tried to explain his obsession with baseball, or My Life as a Fan.
