elaine durbach from Maplewood, NJ

My childhood friend and I growing up in Zambia parted ways when we were 12. She landed up in London, I in New Jersey. Sitting at my kitchen table with friends in 2010, talking about people we'd lost touch with, I mentioned Genevieve for the first time in about 40 years. Two days later, there was a message from her in my email inbox. I thought she'd somehow heard our conversation. In fact, she'd been doing research on a writer called Emily Prager and wrote Elaine by mistake. I had recently interviewed a man called Dennis Prager for my newspaper. Google brought up my story, with my name and email address. She wrote, all in caps, "CAN YOU POSSIBLY BE THE ELAINE DURBACH WHO GREW UP IN ZAMBIA???" Friendship joyfully and hysterically resumed.
