#4797 New Releases, Sept. 2023

New Sounds | Sep 29, 2023

It’s the most wonderful time of the month, with the newest sounds to reach our ears, including new releases by Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer Jlin; sax player, composer, and storyteller Matana Roberts; and Cuban pianist-composer Roberto Fonseca. Plus, there's new work by Mexico City-based experimental quartet Amore Muere, and  Afro-Futurism from Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids.

Hear music by Gary, Indiana’s Jlin, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer who worked with Chicago’s Third Coast Percussion Ensemble on “Perspective’. Listen to two portions of the mini album which showcase the compelling way she expresses links between dance musics and futurist Afro-American electronics, (Boomkat). There’s also new work by Mexico City-based experimental quartet  Amor Muere (“love dies”), a collaboration between Guatemalan-born cellist and composer Mabe Fratti, vocalist Camille Mandoki, sound designer Concepcion Huerta and violinist Gibrana Cervantes. Each has pursued a sound world that isn’t defined by genres like contemporary classical, electronic/sound art, rock, or metal – though they do draw on all of those styles (Schaefer).

Then, listen to the sparkling Afro-Futuristic cosmic journey, “‘Nice It Up’.”  From the legendary jazz and world music ensemble Idris Ackamoor ☥ The Pyramids, led by the San Francisco-based sax player, composer Idris Ackamoor. Also, there’s new music by Cuban pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca, which is a tribute to the lively melodies that once echoed through the Cuban airwaves in the 1930s. Plus, listen to some of the latest chapter of Coin Coin from  sax player, ccomposer, and storyteller Matana Roberts, and more. - Caryn Havlik
