I’m more of a beer guy than a wine aficionado. I’m not so sure my feelings about an India Pale Ale will be altered by the music I’m hearing, but on the other hand, I can’t dismiss the idea either. Adrian North’s study suggests that the music you hear can affect how you taste a glass of wine. A dark, heavy piece of music will make that South Australian shiraz taste even more robust, for example.
Now, I know for a fact that the music I’m hearing affects my mood, and I suspect that the closer I listen to it, the less attention I’m paying to what I’m seeing – a reason I generally don’t plug my iPod into the car stereo system until I’m on the open road. So if music can have those sorts of sensual effects, why not taste as well? It seems a little far-fetched, but just a little.
On the other hand, Adrian’s study was commissioned by Chilean wine maker Aurelio Montes, who actually plays Gregorian chant to his vats of fermenting wine in the belief that music makes the wine taste better.
