#3931: Claudia Molitor With Partch Instruments

For this New Sounds, listen to micro-tonally oriented music by Harry Partch, which uses a 43-note to the octave scale, and invented instruments. Partch’s work pre-dated rise of microtonal music in new music circles, decades later, but also looked back to modal scales of ancient Greece.

The Partch instrumentarium itself was a one-of-a-kind collection, housed at the Partch Institute in Montclair, New Jersey, and curated by Dean Drummond for a number of years, before it moved west to Washington state. The sculpture-like creations are fragile, and designed specifically for playing music of Harry Partch. However, German-based Ensemble MusicFabrik (“Music Factory”) has built a set of Partch instruments and started commissioning contemporary composers to write for the instruments.

Cloud Chamber Bowls Spoils of War (Partch Instruments)

English-German composer Claudia Molitor was one of the composers invited by the ensemble to write for this new Partch instrumentarium. Recently, host John Schaefer was on location at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and recorded an interview with her, on how she uses the Partch instruments (“inappropriate ways”), and what it means to be a composer these days. Hear Molitor’s work, “Walking with Partch,” which calls for just four of these re-creations of the Partch instruments: the Cloud Chamber Bowls, Spoils of War, the Gourd Tree, and Eroica, from the live festival recording. Also, listen to music from Harry Partch, played on the Partch instruments, from his large-scale work, “Delusion of the Fury.”
