For this New Sounds, hear some of the music recorded on location at the 39th annual Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in Northern England. There’s a work for accordion & taped sounds by Irish composer Ailís Ní Ríain, a piece for piano and wrist sensors worn by the pianist from Patrick Nunn, and something for the one-stringed instrument called the Monolin by London-based Mexican composer Andrew Crossley, and more.

From a day of 'Shorts', recorded at the renovated and de-consecrated St. Paul’s Church on the campus of the University of Huddersfield, listen to Sklonište (means “safety” or “security) by Irish composer Ailís Ní Ríain. The work, for accordion & taped sounds, is a musical/visual essay on the experiences of citizens of Sarajevo and their use of shelters during the longest siege in modern warfare in which 13,952 people were killed. Also, listen to electronically enhanced experimental music by Robert Bentall for the Swedish folk instrument the nyckelharpa and live processing.

Then, hear a contempletive drone from a one-stringed instrument called the Monolin by London-based Mexican composer Andrew Crossley. The work, called “Koan #2,” consists of a score with the text instruction: “Play a single note. Stop when you have heard all that it contains.”

Also, hear music from composer Patrick Nunn for a pianist, Zubin Kanga, who wears wrist sensors. “Morphosis” involves processing sound by the pianist’s moving hands. Plus, a work for guitar from German-born, Poland-based composer Raphael Roginski.
