So Percussion: A Gun Show

It’s the most wonderful time of the month, where John Schaefer presents the best new music to have crossed his desk/inbox/earholes. Adam Sliwinski of So Percussion presents selections from “A Gun Show”, now at BAM. It’s an exploration via music, text and movement, of numerous issues surrounding these small machines, and features a battery of percussion that includes Russian sniper rifle parts, obtained online and was originally conceived of as a way for the quartet “to process our emotions after the unfathomable school shootings in Newton, CT.” Then, preview a work from virtuoso flutist and 2012 MacArthur Fellow, Claire Chase, part of her performances at The Kitchen, Dec 1 & 2

Also on tap is somewhat psychedelic music from the “tribal folkadelic” outfit called Flamingods, who formed in Bahrain, and their latest, a tribute to '50s and '60s exotica called Majesty. There’s also a meeting of folk, classical and Scandinavian jazz in music from Norwegian singer/kantele player Sinikka Langeland, and her quintet (which includes fellow Norwegians, trumpeter Arve Henriksen and saxophonist Trygve Seim, Swedish double bassist Anders Jormin and Finnish drummer/percussionist Markku Ounaskari) from a recent record, The Magical Forest. The kantele is a Finnish table harp or zither and is part of Langeland's ensemble, which, on this record, sometimes includes vocal contributions from Trio Medieval. Plus, hear a sample of a large-form work from Neil Rolnick’s latest, Ex Machina, for cellist Ashley Bathgate, who integrates her cello with the laptop and gets to take control of the processing in "Cello Ex Machina."
