It's the most wonderful time of the month - time for new releases! John Schaefer sorts through all of the digital promo submissions, the stacks of physical releases - both newly uncovered and recently acquired - to present some of the finest new music from the month of August. Sample new music from the Neil Cowley Trio from their brand new record Spacebound Apes. Like most of their not-just-jazz-informed instrumental un-gentle post-rock, this latest is a drama-filled bombastic shot of energy, augmented with both electronics and Brian Eno collaborator Leo Abrahams on guitars

Listen to the original film score for “Swiss Army Man,” written by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of the Atlanta, Georgia-based band Manchester Orchestra. The music is unlike other film scores, with layers upon layers of voices -  breathing, humming, and other vocalizations done a cappella by the two composers, and bonus vocal performances by the two lead actors, Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.

Also, hear music about water, based on Book of Isaiah, from Julia Wolfe’s “Thirst,” which is part of an eight-part joint work called “Water,” by the three co-founders of the Bang on a Can: Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. Turning Point Ensemble provides electric chamber orchestra, and the choir Musica Intima is deployed in as many as twelve parts in the chords of “Thirst.”

Then there’s music from FatCat’s 130701 imprint, which celebrated fifteen years of putting out new works by living composers. Hear music from the Warsaw-based cellist Resina (Karolina Rec) which imitates natural elements like flocks of birds, water’s movement, and the stirring of the forest. Also, listen to a web of piano in music from French composer Emilie Levienaise Farrouch, and an unreleased work for prepared piano by Hauschka from the time when he was working on his album, Ferndorf
