#3888: New Music from Brazil

Elza Soares

From samba bands to experimental sounds, along with distinguished icons like Elza Soares and the legendary Caetano Veloso, hear new music from Brazil.

Hear music from Elza Soares, a grand dame of Brazilian pop, who was just part of the opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics. She has just released her latest record, the provocative A Mulher do Fim do Mundo (The Woman at the End of the World) at the age of 79. Written by and recorded with a group of musicians from São Paulo’s “samba sujo” (or “dirty samba”) scene, hear Elza’s weathered, yet irrepressible voice soar with her strength and resilience, over a delicate bed of samba-tronics.

Then, hear from the likes of Caetano Veloso, legendary Brazilian singer and a founder of the Tropicalia cultural movement, and singer/songwriter/guitarist and producer Celso Fonseca. Also, listen to the gorgeously deep and sensual voice of Virginia Rodrigues. There’s also intoxicating, yet cheeky music using traditional bossa nova rhythms and what sounds like the main theme from the Terry Gilliam film, “Brazil,” from Bebel Gilberto (daughter of the influential João Gilberto.) Plus, samba drumming from Timbalada, led by Carlinhos Brown.

Also, there’s experimental music from Uakti, who perform on a collection of instruments they designed and built. Then listen to music by the multi-instrumentalist and composer Hermeto Pascoal, who blurs barriers between jazz, improvisation, folkloric, Brazilian music, tone and noise. And more.
