Cellist Maya Beiser
From

It’s already past the end of the month, and time to listen to some of the new releases from June. John Schaefer has emerged from the stacks of CDs and (virtual) stacks of online material to showcase the cream of the crop. This month, the lineup includes music by Steve Reich, choral work from Tim Hecker, a new project from legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, and a work from cellist Maya Beiser, among others.

From the London Symphony Orchestra's Percussion Ensemble, listen to a portion of Steve Reich's Sextet, and experience the crotchet. (It's what speakers of American English might call the quarter note.) Then, there's music by Arab-American composer Mohammed Fairouz for cellist Maya Beiser, in which Maya sings the text in Aramaic, also engages echoes of ancient cantorial styles. It's from her kickass new record, "TranceClassical," which contains music by Hildegard von Bingen to Imogen Heap and works written by each of the three Bang on a Can Co-Founders.

Then, experience some tasty Afrobeat and Afrofunk goodness with psychedelic overtones spearheaded by pioneering drummer Tony Allen. Listen to music from his Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra, where Haitian voodoo rhythms, afrobeat drumming and Krautrock experimentation come together. Plus, listen to more voodoo-inflected music from a Finnish-Beninese collaboration, the Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble.

Also, hear mutant choral music from composer Tim Hecker with the help of Ben Frost, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and the Icelandic Choir Ensemble, his latest, "Love Streams." Hecker started with 16th century choral snippets courtesy of Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez, pitched them down, stretched them out, and pulled out some notes that disagreed with him. The result is like nothing heard in nature.

All that, and music from LA-based composer Jherek Bischoff's latest, "Cistern" as well as music from Tyondai Braxton.
