Kronos Quartet’s founding violinist David Harrington joins John Schaefer to share new works written for and recorded by Kronos Quartet, but ultimately not intended for them. Listen to music from the global project, Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire – music intended for use by younger, emerging string quartets. Over the course of the next five years, Kronos Quartet/Kronos Performing Arts Association will build a repertoire - commissions from 25 women and 25 men, offering “a mosaic of possibilities.” The online resources to accompany the project will offer scores, parts, recordings, interviews with composers, video tutorials demonstrating techniques, and program notes. The first installment will be available on April 15, 2016. Harrington emphasizes that he hopes these emerging quartets find the repertoire to be fun and challenging, inspired as he was by having worked with string quartets from Kaufman Music Center's Face the Music, a youth group dedicated to performing works by living composers.

For this New Sounds, listen to some of these works by composers from the world over, including music by Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov. In her “rhythmic storm” of a work, “My Desert, My Rose,” the togetherness of a quartet gets a workout, as the score diverges and has the two violins & viola in a different bar of the score than the cello. Also, listen to music by Malian griot Fodé Lassana Diabaté (of the Trio Da Kali), in a work called “Sunjata's Time” written on the balafon, and arranged by Jacob Garchik. Hear a work by violist Garth Knox using alternative sounds created by spectacular bow techniques including the ‘whip’ and the ‘helicopter’, all notated in the score, so that other quartets can replicate them; there’s even video to demonstrate the techniques. Plus, music by Chinese pipa master Wu Man and Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, and more.
