#3850: Finding Their Roots

Leyla McCalla's forthcoming record
From

Listen to music from Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh & the Silk Road Ensemble, Chinese pipa master Wu Man & Friends, New Orleans-based singer and cellist Leyla McCalla and more. All of the artists draw from their cultural and musical roots. On Leyla McCalla's forthcoming record, "A day for the hunter, a day for the prey," she creates a kind of Cajun-Americana-string band combination, which speaks to her Haitian and Creole heritage.

Then, hear music from the acoustic trio, Deltas, who combine guitar, kora and violin in a way that suggests Mali, where they first met, but blends jazz, folk, blues by way of the Loire River and the Niger Delta. Also, listen to Chinese pipa (lute) virtuoso Wu Man, together with musicians representing East African, Slavic, and Appalachian traditions. On the record, Wu Man & Friends, her pipa converses amiably with Ugandan harp (adungu), Appalachian mouth bow and Ukrainian bandura. Plus, there's electro-folk music by Yemeni sisters, A-wa, and more.
