Meet the Brighton-based pianist, violinist, and composer Poppy Ackroyd, through an exclusive intervew recorded on location in London by John Schaefer in April of 2015. She and John introduce music from her recent release, “Feathers,” and Poppy reveals some secrets of her studio-artistry where she sampled, chopped, manipulated, and moved around sounds into hypnotic multi-layered melodic creations. Poppy Ackroyd’s music is made from familiar instruments, like piano, harpsichord, and violin- all sampled and sculpted in unexpected ways. Hear her work, “Timeless,” made with samples from a whirring clock and plucked piano insides; then there’s “Taskin,” named for the harpsichord with feather-quills which she sampled; listen next to “Salt,” written as a present for her mom, using piano frame and violin sounds.

Plus, there's music from the Australian indie-chamber band Nonsemble, from their brand-new recording of the 30 minute piece, “Go Seigen vs. Fujisawa Kuranosuke,” by Chris Perren. The interlocking strings and percussion are based on patterns from a 1953 championship game of go, the ancient Japanese board game.
