Kaki King, John King and ETHEL perform at the Ecstatic Music Festival March 22, 2015
From

Collaborations breed collaborations on this New Sounds. The New Sounds Live concert series joins up with the Ecstatic Music Festival to bring together a three-pronged collaboration of composer John King, guitarist Kaki King, and the string quartet ETHEL. ETHEL was founded when violist Ralph Farris and cellist Dorothy Lawson saw an especially warm reception to their performance of John King’s “Hardwood” as an opportunity to start a string quartet. ETHEL now also includes violinists Kip Jones and Corin Lee. Hear them all sharing a stage, performing the pieces that brought them together and new pieces born out of the collaboration. Learn how bouncing and stomping toddlers influence the compositional styles of Kaki King and Dorothy Lawson.

The group drifts between folk swings, funk riffs, blues riffs, and punk stomps. Introducing his piece "Sammich," ETHEL’s Ralph Farris explains how the term "sammich" fits the group, as a mixture of “everybody sort of swimming in different areas for a while and we jump from style to style, and have a good old time doing it.”
