When New York-based singer and songwriter Razia Said returned to her native Madagascar to record an album influenced by the music and culture of her birth country, she was shocked and appalled by the environmental destruction of her home due to slash and burn agricultural techniques and climate change. Distressed by the declining state of her homeland, Said decided to dedicate her record Zebu Nation (released in February) to bringing awareness to the devastation of Madagascar while celebrating the sounds of the country. "Salamalama Aby," sung in Malagasy, is a bouncy tune inspired by tsapika, an energetic style of dance music native to southern Madagascar. Tonight Said celebrates the release of her album with a special Earth Day performance.
