#3556: Rhythms of Minimalism

On this New Sounds, listen to new music from American composer Chris Campbell. On his latest, “Things You Already Know,” homemade instruments of propane tank drums, bowed psaltery and singing bowls are combined with guitars, cellos and drums to creep, scrape and eventually burst, then string melodies soar, and jams are proverbially kicked out.

Then, hear music by composer-soprano Kate Soper from her recent “Voices from the Killing Jar,” written between 2010 and 2012 for the Wet Ink Ensemble (of which she is a part.)  The title refers to the tool that kills insects without damaging their bodies. This album depicts a series of female protagonists caught in their own kinds of killing jars—Daisy from The Great Gatsby, Lady Macduff from Macbeth, and May Kasahara (a Haruki Murakami character), to name a few. Plus, a bit more of the orchestral score for the remarkable film "Visitors," the fourth collaboration between Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass, who previously worked together on the "Qatsi" trilogy.
