The city comptroller, William C. Thompson Jr., called for greater mayoral control of schools today. Speaking on The Brian Lehrer Show, the comptroller accused Mayor Bloomberg of not paying attention to parents who, he said 'had been locked out of the school system without a voice, for the last 7 years'. 'You need real parental involvement right now,' said Thompson, 'If a parent is not satisfied (with the school), there is nowhere to go.'

Thompson also criticized Mayor Bloomberg's decision to dole out millions in pay hikes to his top aides, saying 'the mayor was out of touch with ordinary New Yorkers.' On Friday, the mayor quietly authorized raises worth $69 million over two years for 6,692 of his managers and nonunion employees. The hikes match union workers' raises.
