I am a huge fan of the show and have read Ms. Dargis for a while but found her off-putting on the air. Dana Stevens and A.O. Scott are great, but I found Ms. Dargis to be oddly angry. Please do not invite her back.

Totally agree with Maureen.

Inglourious Basterds was a truly amazing inventive take on a tried and true trope in cinema. You could feel the joy in his movie making in every scene. And the Nazi was a completely unsympathetic character played by a great actor. If anything, Nazis are the only group of people where a film can portray them as 110% bad with no redeeming qualities and *not* get it from the critics.

Also, I've been a fan of Manohla's all the way back to her LA Weekly days but her mean-spirited sarcasm toward the caller has ended that. Boo.

brian, possibly your biggest fan here. ...i gotta say: the discussion just now of _inglourious basterds_ was tres disappointing. to be worth their salt, film critics need to do better than dismissing a film with a facile, flippant (i'm paraphrasing) "it didn't draw and quarter the nazi so it must be a nazi-sympathizing, hence anti-semitic, film" -- these are the implications of the critique. to add insult, the sole caller was taken out of context and flippantly dismissed. what he "meant", i think, was: to reductively peg the film in that way is hardly worth the airtime. --my view? there was no main character and the nazi reportedly sympathetically characterized was, in fact, the brutal, horrific butcher of the film who was himself literally butchered at the close. in a word, tarrantino slammed the nazi in a grotesque grand finale.-- rather than not being able to handle his material, i feel that in fact tarrantino was fully in control of his subject matter and handled far more masterfully than many other filmmakers have done, including spielberg. ...the critique offered should have been pushed back on and unpacked. thanks for listening!

I am very glad this year, that they have included Fanfavoirtes, as opposed to just critics picks. What makes a great movie, the fact that a few elite like it, or that masses like it?

I also think it opens up for actual good movies that were made to be made and ended up being great. I hate when you can tell that a movie was made for the Oscars. Like American Beauty, as my standing example. Such an overrated winner.

Oscar talk is SO DEADLY DULL. How about equal coverage of other industries self-congratulation awards. At least it would be different and not over-reported.

The Onion's A.V. Club had a different take on "Inglourious Basterds" (btw, I still can't believe Tarantino passed up the chance to spell "Bastards" w/a "u"): They call it "a movie about the power of propaganda-—movies, rumors, campaigns of terror, and the like—-to shape the perceptions and directions of world events" (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-year-in-film-2009,36408/; scroll down to #4, backwards from #20).

I could care less about Basterds winning but how exactly is it offensive? I'm jewish and I don't think the "content" of the movie is offensive. Stupid maybe but taking offense to it is just as stupid. The movie is fun, the disdain coming from these guests seems undeserved.

If you want to talk offensive then the Hurt Locker can easily fit that bill. Stolen story, unrealistic portrayals, war porn...

moviegoers do not need or want to hear book reports
about films they plan to attend with their narrow moralistic myopic take..

talk about the craft and the power of a film to inspire or entertain.

My favorite movie of "09" was the HANGOVER. It was awesome. And of the nominees, I really liked the cute sentiment of UP and would like to see it win. Really, anything over AVATAR would be great, talk about overrated budgetbust... I mean BLOCKbuster.

Crash was a deserving winner, different, entertaining, well acted and directed.
