Is New York City Handing Out Weak Condoms?

Mayoral candidate Christine Quinn has questioned the quality of the free condoms handed out by New York City -- she says she's heard complaints that they are weak, and too small for many users (the condoms only come in one size). At last night's Republican debate, John Catsimatidis said that “I think we should buy the strongest condoms that we can get.” Sexual health writer and expert Martha Kempner discusses how condom quality can vary, and fact-checks the candidates claims.

I thought they were talking about handing them out in schools, was that the situation?

Think it is peculiar how a woman is talking about condoms. Cannot imagine a man rating diaphragms. I mean it.

Issue is size. We joke that they are training condoms. They are so narrow that they rip when trying to get them on.

The city shouldn't be handing them out: abstinence education, otherwise you're just promoting inappropriate sexual behavior. (Condoms only work 92% anyway.)
