Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Bradley, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking state secrets. The day after sentencing, Manning came out as transgender.

“Chelsea didn't want this to have this be something that overshadowed the case, (she) wanted to wait until the case was done to move forward,” her lawyer David Coombs said in an interview.

Her gender identity could complicate her stay at the all-male military prison Fort Leavenworth, where she is set to spend the next 35 years.
