Moreland & Arbuckle has been making its bluesy roots rock -- centered around the work of singer and harmonica player Dustin Arbuckle and guitarist Aaron Moreland, with his signature electric cigar box instrument -- for more than a decade. The group's new record, 7 Cities (out July 30) is a concept album based around the story of the 16th century explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado -- and his search for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold in the band's home state of Kansas.
Moreland & Arbuckle has spent a career exploring all the edges of blues and incorporating elements from folk and country to rock and soul. But for 7 Cities the group looks, at times, towards an even harder edge. This is due in part to their collaboration with Matt Bayles, the producer best known for his work with metal and post-metal bands like Mastodon, Isis and Botch. The result a gritty, swampy blues, with a thoroughly contemporary bite.
