Discovering a New Land, in Middle and High School

This spring SchoolBook formed a partnership with LynNell Hancock's education reporting class at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. During the semester, the students produced articles about issues and people in the city's public school system, and posted them on the class's Web site, SchoolStories: Education Reporting in NYC. For weeks, SchoolBook has been featuring the students' work. This is another in the series.

There are an estimated 1.3 million people immigrating to the United States each year. Many are children, and most are poor. In Queens, almost half the residents were born outside the U.S.

Jackie Kostek presents an audio slide show about one middle school student making the transition, and Ankita Rao writes about one immigrant community in "The Long Path From Bangladesh to College in America."
