At 14 Schools, the Vending Machine's Crunch Comes From Carrots

Monday, October 03, 2011 - 01:26 PM

The cupcake ban, as it turns out, was just the beginning.

In the two years since outlawing most bake sales, New York City’s Department of Education has purged vending machines in its school buildings of the worst junk food — think soda and fried chips — and stocked 14 of them with real fruits and vegetables in a pilot program.

The healthier snacks are part of a larger national trend in schools to do to vending machines what has already been done in many school cafeterias.

The upgraded fare in the New York schools includes: Del Monte pineapple, watermelon, mango and grapes; Mott’s apple slices; a vegetable medley of carrots and celery; almonds; and Fiber One granola bars.

The 14 machines are all in high schools: Fiorello H. La Guardia, Stuyvesant and Murry Bergtraum in Manhattan; Bronx Science, Herbert H. Lehman and DeWitt Clinton in the Bronx; Forest Hills, Long Island City, Benjamin N. Cardozo, John Bowne, Newtown and Hillcrest in Queens; Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn; and Susan E. Wagner on Staten Island.

“I think it’s a good idea for those machines to be everywhere,” said Marcus Marino, co-president of the parents association at La Guardia High, who buys packets of apple slices and carrots and celery from a similar machine at his gym. “It’s nice to have an option for a snack that’s healthy.”

These so-called "healthy vending machines" typically have slightly higher prices than traditional machines, ranging from $1 to $2 in New York city, because the products use organic or higher quality ingredients and the machines have to be restocked more often, according to several vending machine operators.

At the 4,000-student Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Gerald Martori, the principal, said the fresh-cut pineapple, mango and watermelon sell out almost every day and have to be restocked.

“It was pretty much an instant hit,” he said. “Kids, like any consumer, when they find something good that they like, they don’t mind paying for it.”

Vladimir Hurych, a vice principal at the 3,500-student Long Island City High School in Astoria, said that some of his students were suspicious at first but that they were won over by free samples handed out by the vending operator at lunchtime.

Mr. Hurych said he would like to see more of the healthy vending machines in schools as a way to help fight childhood obesity. He has become a regular himself. On Saturdays when he oversees enrichment classes, he heads upstairs afterward for the pineapple chunks.

“It’s very convenient,” he said. “And it tastes very fresh, very good — otherwise, I wouldn’t be going back.

While most schools do not offer fresh-pineapple-out-of-a-machine — yet — Department of Education officials said that all of the city’s nearly 600 school vending machines now follow nutritional guidelines.

Snacks, for instance, may not have artificial sweeteners, and they are limited to 200 calories and 200 milligrams of sodium. Sugars and fats are to make up no more than 35 percent of the total calories, and saturated fats no more than 10 percent of total calories. (There are exceptions for fruit and nuts.)

Here are the nutritional guidelines for products sold in the city's schools
