Graduation ceremonies are underway and will run through next week at schools across the city.

The graduating class of the Young Women's Leadership School in East Harlem got their diplomas on Thursday. Looking at the graduates in their white caps and gowns, teacher Sonia Fernandez said she's sad to see them go.

"It has been a particularly fun, exciting class. There was never a bad day with them," she said.

Senior Kadiatu Koroma said she sees graduation as another step towards freedom: "I just think about having more independence, being able to be responsible, and just growing into adulthood."

It includes notable figures such as Robin Roberts, a host of the television show “Good Morning America,” His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, and Dr. Ricardo Fernandez, president of Lehman College.
