WNYC Listen to Brian Lehrer and Beth Fertig on the state of NYC education

The day after Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg made education the centerpiece of his State of the City Address, WNYC reporter Beth Fertig was a guest on The Brian Lehrer Show to discuss a merit pay proposal for teachers and the impasse between the mayor and the teachers union over teacher evaluations.

Many callers echoed the sentiments of one woman who identified herself as a teacher from Queens.

"It's a nice idea on face value," she said about a merit pay system. "When you put it into practice I don't know if it's something that can be applied fairly."
