Emma Brockes discusses discovering her mother’s hidden past. In her memoir She Left Me the Gun: My Mother’s Life Before Me, she tells her mother, Paula’s, story of growing up with an abusive, tyrannical father in South Africa,  seeking justice on her own when the court system fails her, then escaping to England to begin a new life.
