The NYPD is confirming that 26 people were shot, 7 fatally, in a rash of violence over the weekend.
Because of the uptick, police are stepping up security in public housing developments and deploying extra vehicles to areas where violence broke out. Plainclothes officers will be on patrol, and the NYPD said it's paying close attention to gang activity.
Despite the violence, the NYPD is touting a lower homicide rate; police said shooting incidents are down 27 percent.
Speaking Monday, Mayor Bloomberg promised to do more to combat gun violence.
"You have a right to live in BedStuy and not have bullets whiz past your head," he said. "That is a civil right and the right to walk safely on any street in our city."
