Alice Russell: Big-Voiced British Soul

Alice Russell performs in the Soundcheck studio.

The British soul singer Alice Russell's career has been something of a slow burn -- full of experimentation and lots of collaboration. She first turned heads back in 2006 with a cover of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army"; David Byrne tapped her for his recent concept album Here Lies Love; and last year she collaborated on a cumbia-influenced album with the producer Quantic. Now, after a long wait, she’s released a brand new solo album -- her fifth -- called To Dust. Alice Russell and her band play live in the Soundcheck studio.

Hear their performance, including the songs "Hard And Strong," and "To Dust." Plus, a stream, below, of Russell's arresting cover of James Blake's "Retrograde."
