Yes Brian, as a German word it should be pronounce with the long O sound. Words with oe in german, referred to a O umlaut, actually is the contraction of two sounds, O and Eh.
We also call John Boehner, whose name actually spell out the intended German sounds, Bayner. I guess he suggest that incorrect pronounciation to avoid the ugly connotation the right version implies.
It should be "Gertals" like Goethe, no? Not to be pedantic.
Brian, can you ask Nancy if she knows anything about the project to raise the road bed on the Bayonne Bridge. This was proposed to let tall container ships pass under it. The Bayonne Bridge is cast into my high school ring.
