Global Acoustic Music

« previous episode | next episode »

Monday, April 22, 2013

For this New Sounds, we’ll hear some global acoustic works from the Touré-Raichel Collective.  It’s a collaboration between Malian musician Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli producer/keyboardist Idan Raichel which came about following a concert in Tel Aviv.  The results are stunning and elegant conversations between guitar (Touré) and piano (Raichel), where the strings of the piano are sometimes plucked like a harp or kora.  The songs are anchored by Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane.

Plus, more music from the AfroCubism recording, some music by Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabate, and something from Ry Cooder & Vishwa M. Bhatt.  Those, and many other (mostly) acoustic works from around the world.

New Sounds, Brought to You by Impatience

There’s been too much quiet for too long from the impatient staff.  During the brief hiatus, the softball season began, and was then disrupted. (Go NYPR Independents!)  The recently-hobbled and still impatient-to-recover staff has had a lot of fun on the internets while trying her level best to bounce back.  Here’s a sampling of musical things that brought joy and delight while icing and elevating. Maybe someday John Schaefer will get a chance to hear them.
