New Tappan Zee Bridge Design Released

A selection committee has recommended a futuristic design for the new Tappan Zee Bridge, with suspension supports leaning outwards, giving the bridge the look of a stripped-down building by Santiago Calatrava.

Calatrava has designed the World Trade Center transit hub, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Athens Olympic stadium.

The New York State Thruway Authority -- the agency in charge of the project -- will consider the design, along with two others, for a new Tappan Zee Bridge. The three designs were released at Governor Cuomo's cabinet meeting Wednesday.

The designs range from $3.142 billion to $4.059 billion when all estimated costs are totaled. All three proposals are being called "transit ready," though images of the bridge being recommended don't show buses or transit on the roadway.

Details of how the proposals will be financed still haven't been released. Governor Cuomo said both the bridge's full cost and the amount of federal financing (still unknown) would have to be tallied before a bridge financing plan could be released.

The three designs will be considered December 17th by the Thruway Authority board.

The state had said the bridge would cost $5.2 billion, but had been hoping the cost would be adjusted downward -- in part to lower future tolls  on drivers.

I'm sorry, but most of you are very un-informed or mis-informed on the matter of this new bridge. For almost all of you that griped and complained about not incorporating mass transit, read the briefing by the State. It DOES! While you will not see any tracks per se in any of these renderings, the new bridge being built is engineered to support future mass transit/rail. It is not being included now because of cost and logistics, but it will be integrated in the future, and one of the design criteria was to engineer the new structure to allow for that future integration.

Secondly, for anyone who thinks this bridge is not needed, again, you need to do a little more reading. It is. Traffic is a huge problem as anyone who uses it knows. Also, one other person already commented that the bridge will cost 1.2 or 1.3 Billion in deferred maintenance just to keep the bridge open another 10 years. At that, they may have to close it to trucks in the future and it will certainly not remedy the horrendous traffic situation that exists.

For the person who commented it should be a truss design and not a cable-stayed bridge...first, check the spelling of cable-stayed. Secondly, you say all bridges in NYS and NYC are trusses....Um, are you blind? Think again. Three examples...The GW, the Verrazano, and the Triboro/RFK. Also, BMW...Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg. Come on now, seriously....??? Don't make me go on!

But for the reality....it's happening, like it or not....but the new design will be stunning, not quite as boring as you may have thought.

I agree with much of the above, the commentaries, and yes, the Honda like "H H H H" verticals, appear to dominate-his choice for a crossing there.

A crossing without Rail Mass Transit, is also stupid governing, too, as nearly all of you have suggested.

Since the 1990s, the Harrison, NY, visionary, Alexander Saunders has taught, and has had the answer, and to this quaint governor's, rearward, or tight butt thinking; visionary Saunders has studiously proposed tunneling, via excavation, by a machine (as built in place by a German Engineering firm...). His plan includes major mass transit rails, no less.

Furthermore, this entirely buried magnificent tunnel, as he has seen and proposed, would have, in my own opinion, no need of any major maintenance, -for well over a thousand years after it's completed, I believe.

THIS IS A VERY BIG MISTAKE MAKING A CABILE STAY BRIDGE FOR THE NEW TAP.

THE NEW TAP SHOULD BE A TRUSS BRIDGE DESIGN LIKE THE OLD TAP IS AND ALL THE OTHER BRIDGES IN NEW YORK STATE AND CITY ARE NOW.

I SUGGEST YOU STOP THIS DESIDN NOW AND LOOK AT THE TRUSS BRIDGE DESIGN AS THEY ALL ARE NOW. YOU MUST LOOK UP THE HISTORY OF WHY THE TRUSS DESIGN FOR ALL NYS AND NYC BRIDGES WAS PICKED IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT IS THAT CABLES ONLY SUPPORT THE LOAD IN THE DOWN DRICTION AND NOT IN THE UP DIRECTION.

YOU ARE MAKING A 3.1 TO 5 BILLION DOLLAR MISTAKE WITH THIS TYPE OF BRIDGE!

John, because if it were 100 ft further south, it would be in the Port Authority's jurisdiction.

Rob, have you seen the annual maintenance cost for the existing bridge? They say it will take $1.3 billion to keep it in service for another ten years. It's nearing the end of its useful life. They want to replace it before they have to start banning trucks.

i think this proposal should cost nothing to build. we should get the honda motor company to sponsor the whole thing. it appears that we are using four of the honda "H" logos to support the span.

but seriously, mass transportation needs to be part of this.

Are these people CRAZY??? How can they even consider such UGLY designs??? The one that was chosen is the worst of the three and I am totally disgusted. Just another mistake like the Goshen Government Building. AND no trains??? RIDICULOUS!!!

How silly to make a bridge with no train tracks for transit, if anything we should allow NO cars and only mass transit on this bridge, until we have thinking leaders we will be stuck with bridges like this one - whose only purpose was to evade the PANYNJ (a good purpose, as I'd like to be able to live a PA free life) - let's think regionally and strategically. Where are the big thinkers? Where are the visionaries?

Any TZ crossing - bridge or tunnel - that does not incorporate mass transit is another kick in the teeth to taxpayers of Rockland, Orange and northern Bergen counties, who are already getting RAPED by the MTA tax and the lack of service provided to them. Without the mass transit option, this legalized highway robbery will continue unabated for decades.

Moving ahead with a new Tappan Zee Bridge is outrageous and a slap in the face to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Despite the Governor's newfound concerns about Climate Change and storm surges, we're going to build a new bridge that isn't needed and that will make future storms more frequent and more severe?

We should be directing our money to projects that will help prevent future storms, or mitigate their impact. Here's a few that are being discussed as necessary:

Raising the Hudson Line Metro North tracks above the storm surge level
Building NY Harbor protections
Hardening our tunnels from seawater
