Walmart and the AR-15

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

George Zornick, Washington reporter for The Nation, talks about his latest article, “How Walmart Helped Make the Newtown Shooter's AR-15 the Most Popular Assault Weapon in America.” It’s a look at how Walmart became the top seller of firearms and ammunition nationwide. As his story was going to press, Walmart pulled the weapon from its website, but it's still on shelves in about 1,700 stores nationwide. The article appears in the January 7-14 issue of The Nation.

This was the most ridiculous guest with the most ridiculous pretense for an article I have heard on this show since I started listening to LL more years ago then I can remember. The guest basically made arguments against walmart and then backed away from all of them when pressed. He used conjecture to base arguments against walmart for issues that may happen. Mr Lopate did not call him on this , on the contrary he added to the conjecture with his lack of knowlege on the subject matter. This puts into question , in my mind , all of the information i have heard on the show in the many years I have been listening. This is coming from a person who hates walmart as much as George Zornick. This was dishonest as well as a cheap way to fill a deadline for a marginal magazine. The level of expectation in journalism has sunk to an all new low.

Mr Zornick has done a credible job in attempting to assassinate Walmart a hugely successful American Company that employs thousands from coast to coast. He seems to be nothing but a shill for the anti gun crowd.

I refuse to shop at 'Wally World'- they've helped destroy this country too much.

I have to disagree with what seems to be the thrust of this argument. What is the rationale for not selling guns at Walmart? They are a department store and should be free to stock their stores with whatever legal items that sell best in the particular area.

Keeping illegal or legal weapons out of the hand of nutjobs.

During the years of the assault Weapons Ban, many states adopted right-to-carry. Violent crime decreased in states that adopted right-to-carry.

I think Mr. Zornick has missed something here. You stated that the walton family are politically conservative. in the south where they live, conservative also means Christian. My guess (and I spent 10 years in the south) is that walmart does not sell certain materials and magazines and recordings with parental warnings not because they have a sense of social responsibility but because the sale of such items would violate their sense of christian morality. Please understand the paradox here - in the mind of a southern conservative Christian, christian morality, social responsibility, and concern for gun deaths in the black community are not related. I have met many southern conservative christians who could give a toss about gun deaths in the black community. One of those, who is now a methodist minister (this individual once told me "two continents - two races") would probably see gun deaths in the black community as a good thing. As far as social responsibility goes with a southern conservative, it is only as good as what drives their socio-political agenda.

Civilians cannot legally buy "assault rifles" in the US.

LL and the guest repeating "assault weapons", "assault weapons", "assault weapons" don't add to the credibility of the show.

This is a ridiculous segment. What difference does it make who sells the gun? Why is Walmart the villain because they are trying to increase their revenue and finally, it's Walmarts fault that there's a run on guns? That's the result of people feeling that the Obama admin will take away people's weapons. This is just knee jerk response. Get real.

The Bushmaster AR-15 was the principle weapon used by the DC Sniper, the Aurora Colorado theater shooting and the Newtown school massacre. It is essentially the civilian equivalent of the US military's M-16.

What we are dealing with is a weapon that has a high rate of fire of a very deadly round, the .223, which is designed to tumble after impact with flesh creating wounds that are equivalent to bullets of much higher calibre.

Banning assault weapons is a sideshow as they are used in a very small number of homicides however those homicides are very often headline grabbers with large numbers of citizens wounded or killed. I don't need or want one but I HAVE to grant that there are reasonable people that think they DO. Unfortunately, these reasonable people aren't doing much to create laws that help us keep these very destructive weapons out of the hands of some nutjobs.

So he's targeting Walmart. Okay, sounds like they have issues. But could not these same crimes against Walmart (stealing weapons, ammo) have occurred in other stores? I think he's making Walmart the fall guy for issues that could be noted for others.

Two questions: Doesn't Walmart have to do a background check (as a gun dealer)? It's not like buying a fishing rod.

and 2.) How many guns used in crimes originated in legal sales (not stolen from) Walmart?

Was an Ar-15 used in the shootings? I keep hearing people argue over this.
