"The Gatekeepers" - Israel's Secret Service

Monday, January 28, 2013

Director Dror Moreh talks about his new documentary, “The Gatekeepers,” nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Six former heads of the Shin Bet, Israel’s Secret Service, reflect on their successes and failures to maintain security in the midst of shifting politics and imperatives of the “peace process.” Each man weighs in candidly on topics from preemptive strikes to confronting terrorists. “The Gatekeepers” opens at Lincoln Plaza February 1 and at Film Forum February 20.

Just returned from Isr. where I watched this movie.
At one point, Avi Shalom says Israel's IDF is no different than the German Army in WWII.
You hear the IDF compared to Germany, and here is a Shin Beit guy saying yes, but in an anti-semetic way (gas chambers, mass graves, Jew hunters), but as an occupying force (treatment of Holland, France, Chech Rep., Hungry).

Any European, African, Asian who opposes occupation while living on Native American land in North America, for example Brooklyn...

I WISH I HAD! I was almost about to buy an apartment in Ariel for $25,000! Not doing so was a big mistake, I think. Today Ariel has a university with 12,000 students, including many Palestinian Arabs, and is a thriving town. Big mistake buying an apartment in Rohovot for $60,000 which in the end I was forced to sell to my LEFT WING ex-wife at a fraction in the divorce settlement.

Thanks for reminding me about the big mistake I made (a) not buying in Ariel in the WB, and (b) marrying a LEFT WING BI*OTCH! A social worker, no less.

So why didn't you stay there to fight for those views. You should've bought a house in the west bank.

You should ask them why are they are still living on "Palestinian lands" conquered by their evil grandparents? I go by the Decision of the League of Nations that in 1922 authorized Jewish settlement anywhere in Palestine. If these people believe they are living on Palestinian lands, they should give their homes and apartments to the Arabs and also leave the country> They have no right to any of the country if they believe what they do. It is ALL conquered "Palestine" if the logic of these Leftists are followed to its logical conclusion. It is either Jewish land or Arab land, just as Ireland is either Irish land or British land. They are just working for the defeat of Israel while hanging on to their luxury homes and apartments build on Palestinian lands many decades ago. To me, Israel is Jewish land occupied by Arabs. These people don't know where they are. They can't decide what they are or where they are.

So JG, are saying that even though you "abandoned" Israel DECADES AGO, because of "the left" - I should put more credibility in your (more authentic?) views, than some someone who ACTUALLY still lives in Israel?

What the recent elections in Israel proves is that the society is split right down the middle, with 61% going to right of center parties, and 59% going to left of center parties. It's not all that different from the US, except in the last election, thanks to an inept candidate Romney, the Left got about 53% of the vote and the Right got about 47%.

In the end ,if there is a God of Israel, Israel will survive no matter what its internal and external enemies do. If not, Israel will go down with little more than a big footnote in history books.
When the inevitable end war comes, all enemies, internal and external will get their due.

a good short interview mostly based on what the shin bet leaders think; and what they think is a bit of breakthrough; honest thinking men who have called to do many tasks and are frustrated as they look back on 45 years of "still no solutions." sad but true state of the situation!!

"Five Broken Cameras"-Palestine from the point of view of Arab residents of The West Bank-is a nice compliment to The Gatekeepers. It is also nominated for this years Oscar Documentary.

A PBS series on Jews in America concluded Jews are at home in America, have succeeded in every field, and more Israelis are coming here now. There is anti semitism everywhere, as there is racism - see The Central Park Five, which disappeared from NYC movie theaters after a couple of weeks while The Help stayed for months. Yes, the Holocaust should never be forgotten. But as Henry Louis Gates said at The NY Historical Society, "Being a victim doesn't mean you're morally superior".

There is a group calling itself "Jewish Voice for Peace".

Where is their sister group - "Muslim Voice for Peace"?, "Salaam Now"?

This guy is a TYPICAL leftist and I lived in Israel for ten years and I KNOW That the LEFT is in charge of most things in Israel. I left Israel because of the Left. The Left is doing everything humanly possible to destroy the Jewish state. It is ONLY by the Grace of God that Israel somehow still survives, and not thanks to these guys. These guys are lucky that God doesn't care about their ridiculous views, and has made a PROMISE. Those who do not believe in the God of Israel naturally will do everything in their power to bring Israel down, but so far, thankfully, to no success.

We've learned (most of us) that not all Gentiles want to kill us. Now we need to learn that not all Arabs & not all Muslims want to kill us.

The unfortunate fact is, that the only way to fight terrorists successfully is to terrorize them, and not make them feel safe in their homes surrounded by their many wives and children. Why should they feel safe in their homes, when they make no one else safe in their homes?

Leonard, please ask him how much Israeli terrorism affects its prospects for peace, if any? Do IDF incursions into Gaza, such as the one Ethan Bronner described in the Times, make peace more or less possible? Certainly it makes Hamas less likely to make peace. If that happened in Israel it would be called a terrorist invasion. What does he want from America?

Could Mr. Moreh tell us how the head of the Shin Bet is chosen? Is there a confirmation process that involves the legislature, like what we have in the US? In a secret organization, how much impact do Supreme Court decisions even have? For example, the "moderate physical pressure" Leonard referred to has been stretched to the point of what many people would call torture.

I suspect that if Mexico and Canada wanted to "wipe the settler state" off the map, we would not put our thumb in their eye and keep building settlements into Toronto or Cancun. I suspect we'd respect their borders...

Ask your guest where his parents or grandparents are from, and why did they come to Palestine or Israel in the first place? Were the Zionists or was that no place else wanted them?

Jan. 28 2013 12:52 PM

The way for Leftists in Israel to make a lot of money quick is to smear Israel in whatever media they can. There is so much more money to be made selling your drivel to the Muslim world and the rest of the anti-Israel world, which is vast, covering most of the planet.

It shows how incredibly democratic Israel is at the core. Not even in the US can former FBI, CIA and NSA figures speak out so freely about their feelings regarding the past wars. And Israel is still at country still at war, totally surrounded by half a billion people who simply want it dead, or at least to disappear. Imaging if the US was surrounded by a Mexico, Canada, Latin America and many more determined to wipe the settler state called "The United States" off the map.
