The Republican party has been taken hostage by an anti-American, insurrectionist group that refuses to accept Barack Obama as the legitimate President and they would rather destroy our economy than acknowledge Obama's legitimacy.

RL you are confusing a downgrade by the ratings agencies with a default.

Brian asked "the question" WHY is Chuck Hagel worth this fight and why is his name the only one suggested? Todd Z did NOT address the question everyone wants an answer to! of course there are other qualified--even better qualified potential candidates around...

The operative word being "automatic", but it will happen. Default comes before any shutdown. Ratings agencies will react first.

Obama needs a back-up to Hagel. Someone very liberal! Then dare republicans to vote against one of their own.

Your guest is misrepresenting what coming up against the debt ceiling means. The debt ceiling means a government shutdown because the treasury department will take funds away from government operations to honor its debt. It does not mean an automatic default or an automatic credit downgrade (which is meaningless anyway).

Obama has the upper hand on debt ceiling because it's congress that ran up those bills. Not him. Congress holds the purse stings, as they so often reminds us. The president can just look the other way and leave congresses work to itself.

debt ceiling does not shut down the govt. It defaults on what we owe!

As long there are no term limits on Congress members, the "113th" Congress, in Hegelian terms, is just an illusion.

With the abuse of redistricting, Congress - especially the House, is the only branch of government that chooses who votes - FOR THEM, as evidenced with most incumbents retaining their seats, despite their incompetence.

It might as well be the 90th congress.
