Rodney King and Cynthia Kelley in the WNYC studios (Melissa Eagan)

Rodney King was found dead on June 16 in his home swimming pool. He and his fiancée, Cynthia Kelley, were on our show on  April 25th, when his memoir, The Riot Within: My Journey from Rebellion to Redemption, was published. He spoke honestly and movingly about the high speed car chase that ended with a brutal police beating in 1991, the resulting trials, healing from his injuries, and dealing with addiction. We're replaying selections from that interview.

I agree Maude from Park Slope I watched that season of CR. He was a prime example of the human condition. No over the top drama like his castmates. I wanted him to succeed in his sobriety.

This was a great interview/conversation. Platinum standard Leonard.

Maude from Park Slope

Just wanted to say I saw Rodney King on Celebrity Rehab, I'm sure most WNYC listeners have their opinions about reality TV. However, I find Celebrity Rehab a good representation of what it's like to get sober. It's so sad because Rodney King was so honest and brave and kind on the show, and it seemed like he was doing so well at the end of it. It's worth watching, believe it or not.
