Susannah Cahalan's Brain on Fire

Thursday, December 06, 2012

Susannah Cahalan tells the story of coming down with a mysterious illness that caused hallucinations, violence, and dangerous instability, and how it was diagnosed and finally treated. Her memoir Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness is an account of her struggle to recapture her identity and to piece together the story of her “lost month” and how a celebrated neurologist saved her life.

I just finished reading her book "Brain on Fire" and found it fascinating and compelling because (even though it's about herself) her journalistic style of writing and research makes it a much more interesting point of view. I thought at the beginning her family was making a mistake keeping her out of a psych ward and it turned out to save her life. The book offers compelling evidence to not judge a book by it's cover or to make a diagnosis strictly from symptoms.

@Tom from LI. Maybe you should read the book before passing judgement and calling people names. Was your comment really necessary? Who did you help? I highly doubt she's"capitalizing" on it. There's not really any money in writing books there chief.

@BJK from Queens-Maybe you should also read the book. Bipolar was a misdiagnosis.

NPR loves talking to white yuppi-esque females who capitalize on their troubles. Was a Bio really necessary, or would a newspaper piece have been all that was needed. What's that old journalist rule, don't make the story about you! But we live in the age of Boomers and their children and everything's about them! (Call back to a previous Boomer heavy show this week. Mom and daughter)

Does the author realize that the newest maintenance medication to prevent relapse into bipolar mania are the class of compounds known as anticonvulsants?
IE, lamictal, depakote?
Is there any relationship to the syndrome described and manic depression?
