Yes, I'm so glad you asked your guest about US involvements in this region. From what I understand, there is plenty of mining for mobile/electronic devices in this part of the world - I think about these things when considering a gadget, but I think that only 1 in 100,000 people stop to think of where these destructive materials are sourced.
Touch screen rely on some mineral that's mined there.
But, life goes on.
