With so many calls for donations this year because of the election and Sandy, many nonprofit organizations are concerned that a giving hangover will affect donations this holiday season.
Willie Rapfogel, CEO of the Met Council, said on the Brian Lehrer Show that his organization is concerned that political contributions and recent donations to Sandy relief may have exhausted the supply of donor generosity.
“From the perspective of looking over the next month or so as year end giving begins to really happen, I think there is that potential for donor fatigue,” he said.
Sol Adler, executive director of the 92nd Street Y, said organizations do need to expand their outreach efforts.
“If you engage the entire United States community, if you do something so they all feel part of this and responsible for each other, then those who can give will give and are more likely to give more,” he said.
Adler founded Giving Tuesday, which called on people to give money, expertise or time on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. He says the effort was a success, with more than 2,000 partner organizations from across the country participating in the new national day of giving.
