Episode #3231

"Music" of James Joyce

« previous episode | next episode »

Friday, November 16, 2012

Something old, something borrowed – finally with permission – and something new, all in response to James Joyce’s writings.  For this literary edition of New Sounds, we’ll hear the long-awaited, originally intended setting of James Joyce’s text from Molly Bloom’s soliloquy at the end of Ulysses.  Kate Bush's “The Sensual World” re-emerges as "Flower of the Mountain."

This New Sounds also contains music from Chris Rael and his chamber musical “Araby,” where each song is based on a story in “Dubliners.”  John Cage also set texts by James Joyce.  Drawn from “Finnegan’s Wake,” we’ll hear the “Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs,” featuring mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian.  Also, there's an electronic response to James Joyce’s collection of poems, “Chamber Music,” from Martyn Bates, and other tributes from War Against Sleep and Ed Harcourt.  Plus, Syd Barrett’s response, and more.

I would be remiss if I didn't attempt to call attention to the song "Helpless Corpse Enactment" by the band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. The lyrics, as I have been told, come directly from Finnegan's Wake. By the way, John, I absolutely love your show!
