NY Policeman Killed in Highway Accident

Thursday, October 18, 2012

A veteran Nassau County highway patrol officer has been struck and killed while investigating a multi-vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway.

Authorities identified the officer as Joseph Oliveri. He was a 14-year veteran of the Nassau police force and a father of two.

The 43-year-old Oliveri was on duty when the accident occurred around 5 a.m. Thursday. It happened in North Hills between Exit 34 and 36.

Authorities say a Toyota hit a BMW. The BMW pulled over. The Toyota struck a Honda before stopping.

Oliveri was standing by the Toyota when an SUV came along, struck the Toyota and then the officer.

Police say no charges were immediately filed. However, they were looking into whether alcohol and drugs were involved.
