Guest Picks: Cheryl Strayed

Thursday, August 02, 2012

Cheryl Strayed spoke to guesthost Julie Burstein on the Leonard Lopate Show recently. They discussed Strayed's advice column. She's collected some of her favorite columns in the book, Tiny Beautiful Things. And she also told us about some of her favorite things, tiny, beautiful or otherwise.

What have you read or seen over the past year that moved or surprised you?

Rachel Dewoskin’s fantastic novel Big Girl Small. It’s an utterly absorbing story about a young woman in crisis. Rachel’s writing is beautiful and riveting.

What are you listening to right now?

My 8-year-old son has recently become wildly interested in rap, and so he downloaded several songs onto my iPhone. I’ve found myself listening to these songs because they make me feel a little bit like I’m with my kids. I’ve been away a lot while promoting Wild and TBT (Tiny Beautiful Things). My current favorite is Eminem’s “Without Me.”

What’s one thing you’re a fan of that people might not expect?

        Survivor. The TV show.

What’s your favorite comfort food?

Wine. Baguette. Brie. In that order. And can we have some olives, too?
