New Sounds of Gospel Trombone

« previous episode | next episode »

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

For this New Sounds program, dig into the instrumental gospel tradition, specifically, the one centered around the trombone.  It is prominent in some churches, such as the United House of Prayer for all People in Harlem, and the shout-gospel choir (with brass band), the McCollough Sons of Thunder.  Listen to their roof-raising performance, recorded at the World Festival of Sacred Music from May of 2001 - a New Sounds Live event.  Led by Elder Babb, the 17 trombones, trumpet, percussion, brought down the house at Merkin Hall, with the dancing, singing and clapping in the aisles.

Then there’s gospel-saturated trombone music from Jacob Garchik, and his recent, “The Heavens: the Atheist Gospel Trombone Album.”  Also, from trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre (also part of the Saturday Night Live band), listen to gospel-inspired trombone music, with shells, from the record, “Sanctified Shells.”  Plus, spacey jazz music with lots of trombone, (and zither!), from the legendary Kelan Philip Cohran, together with The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and more.
