It's going to be a sweltering weekend for the region, with heat advisories and excessive heat warnings up for much of the Northeast.

The temperature is forecast to hit 99 degrees Friday at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Newark could hit the low 100s Friday.

A fire hydrant safety alert has been put in place. The Fire Department is asking residents to report illegally opened fire plugs. The FDNY says fire hydrants running at full blast could lead to a dangerous drop in the water pressure necessary to fight fires. Instead, free spray caps are available at fire houses in all five boroughs.

The National Weather Service says the humidity will be noticeable but not oppressive.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid- to upper-90s through Sunday.

Officials encouraged residents to avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of water and check up on the elderly.
