New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik and Jungian analyst Margaret Klenck discussed Jung's unconscious mind for the “Red Book Dialogues” at the Rubin Museum of Art.
Gopnik was given an image to contemplate, of a barque bearing the Egyptian symbol for the Sun, accompanied by a benign sea monster. It prompted him to muse about the human connection to water, journeys by sea, the function of monsters in our lives, and the role of the essayist as a mediator between an elegant surface and the turbulence below. Artists Chris Van Allsburg and Vincent Van Gogh, as well as Beowolf’s Grendel, also made cameo appearances in Gopnik’s talk.
WNYC’s “Talk to Me” series is featuring notable dialogues from the Red Book Dialogues.
