Winter's annual new-music fete, the Ecstatic Music Festival, has come out of hibernation and has become a monthly music series within the River To River Festival called Ecstatic Summer. Like its mothership, the sunny season offshoot will highlight live indie-classical collaborations by classical, pop, rock and electronic musicians.
Saturday’s inaugural festival installment features Merrill Garbus, who is the frontwoman of the indie rock act tUnE-yArDs; the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth; and the electro-acoustic composer William Brittelle. The show is a reprise of sorts of a 2011 Ecstatic Music concert. Also on the bill is a Jewish culture-inspired musical project called The Yehudim, which was created by composer and Ecstatic Music Festival founder Judd Greenstein.
In addition to performing their own new work, the groups on the bill will also play together. Roomful of Teeth, for example, is expected to perform “Bizness” and other songs from the tUnE-yArds catalog alongside Merrill Garbus.
Ecstatic Summer takes places at the River To River Festival in World Financial Center Plaza on Saturday night. For a taste of what's in store, check out these performances by the groups in the concert.
