Justin Vivian Bond is a transgender singer-songwriter, activist, actor and writer. Bond is also a cabaret performer who formed part of the drag act Kiki & Herb in the ‘90s and starred in the film “Shortbus” in 2006.
Last year, “v” (Bond’s preferred gender-neutral pronoun) published a memoir called Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels and released the LP Dendrophile, which features musicians Sam Amidon and Beth Orton, among others.
Bond’s latest collection of songs, Silver Wells, was released last week. The record was produced by Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), and gets its inspiration from Joan Didion’s 1970 novel Play It As It Lays. Silver Wells includes Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen covers, along with original tunes like “Stars,” which you can download here.
Justin Vivian Bond plays every Monday night at Midtown West’s 54 Below through July 9. Before the gig, download “Stars,” listen to Bond on Soundcheck this past November and watch this brief but illuminating interview with v in the video below.
