I am a 28 year old living in NYC, and a scientist ... I think an
important unsaid point here is that it is usually middle and upper
class white and Asian kids in their 20s that know how to use these
weak ties and ask for favors. How can we help underrepresented groups
(at least in my field, the sciences) like African Americans and US
Born hispanics learn these skills?

My wife's long-lost high school friend asked my wife to put in a word for her at her work. She did, and the friend got the interview. A day later, this friend began a 3-week assault of emails berating the HR person because no one had gotten back to her about the position. It's embarrassing when you try to help someone who turns out to be a loon and it bites you in the butt.

Also, many people don't want to help others TOO much. After putting so much time, money and effort into their career, why would anyone want to hand over a short cut to a rookie for no incentive other than "good karma?"

I'm in my late 20s, and all but one of my jobs so far I've gotten through someone I've known, however tenuously. (My last job I got through my friend's husband's middle school classmate!)

is the urban tribe the reason young urbans put off marriage, kids, etc until their 30s? or is it the other way around? Which is the antecedent?
