David Westin on his Time at ABC News

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

David Westin discusses his 13 years as the president of ABC News, during a time when President Clinton was impeached, the too close to call 2000 presidential election, the 9/11 attacks, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. In Exit Interview, he takes readers inside the newsroom and explores the uncertainty inherent in his job, and whether its possible for journalists to be both good at their jobs and people of good moral character.

Guests:

One of my most indelible memories of 9/11 was Martha Raddatz rushing up to Colin Powell at the end of a State Dept. briefing and asking on air -- at the behest of Mr. Jennings asking over the air if anyone from ABC News was present at the briefing-- whether Powell could confirm a report (via a young ABC News reporter covering the White Hourse) that Ari Fleischer had said that the White House was a target of the attacks. Powell's response -- "Ari said that???" and then, that yes, he had heard the story, and that he had no comment, cast a pall over a bit of news that might have been sensationalized -- TV journalism had a thirty-six hour window in which you could see the process working; in which the 'veil' was lifted, and by the time Christie Whitman was proclaiming the water and air safe, it had fallen again.

Why is that news manufacturing and the movie manufacturing businesses are virtually the only businesses covered by the media? There are so many other kinds of businesses that get almost no coverage at all.

Forgive me, Mr. Westin re-Exit interviews. I know, been thru 1. Grateful that I was honored. Supers were crying as they informed me that they needed to make me go. However, the exit interview (which is required by law, if I am not mistaken)did take place, very briefly, for I am a loyal person. Check it out. khadija ouahmane

Do you regret your decision to put Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff in the anchor seat after Peter passed away?
